In the Seneca language, Canandaigua means “the chosen spot”, and is the name given to the city and town that is located at the north end of Canandaigua Lake. It’s a beautiful area, featuring a historic downtown with shops, restaurants and quaint inns. The town of Canandaigua that surrounds the city is an agricultural area with a variety of dairy and crop farms and residential neighborhoods. Notably, the area was a center for the women’s suffrage movement. In 1873, Susan B. Anthony, a leader of the women’s suffrage movement, was tried at the Ontario County Courthouse in the City of Canandaigua for voting in Rochester, NY in the 1872 elections in violation of state laws that allowed only men to vote. . She was found guilty and fined $100.
